Irisnet 1 - The Brussels-Capital Region broadband network

Actions sur le document

IRISnet is the name of the Brussels-Capital Region high capacity telecommunication network aimed at simplifying the telecommunications among the various regional public bodies. Why the name IRISnet?

‘Irisnet' is trilingual and consists of the symbol from Brussels combined with the word "net" or network. The name is also used as the regional Internet domain name "irisnet.be" and will also be used to indicate relevant pilot applications in relation to Informatics.

As a name IRISnet is not purely coincidental, it is in fact an example  of historical continuity.

This broadband network currently uses some of the most advanced technology available and is suitable for simultaneous transmission of voice, images and data. Each site has a single point of connection, with a singular intermediary point of contact and similarly a single on-line help-line for all of its users and services.

The system is in fact comprised of a complex telecommunication infrastructure, made up of optic fibre cables and exchanges (switching nodes) linked between the various regional and local administrative bodies within the Region.

As such the IRISnet-network cannot be viewed as an objective, rather as a means that enables Brussels-Capital as a region to achieve its objectives. These measures in themselves are not enough in order to provide the desired effect; that calls for simultaneous active support and promotion made in favour of telecommunications-based applications. This program is in fact a continuation of efforts to modernize local government, which the Region has been actively financing and supporting since 1989.

In short, the network plays the role of an additional means, alongside of other initiatives undertaken by the Regional authorities in the past regarding the introduction of new technology, which will hopefully lead to the accomplishment of a number of pilot schemes and measures at different regulatory and institutional levels, for obtaining the objectives mentioned earlier.
